Goji Berries: What is their origin?

Who doesn't know goji berries today? They are delicious red berries that contain a large amount of substances that are very useful for our body.

But do you know where they come from? If not, we'll tell you everything.

Where do goji berries come from?

Goji (goji is the Chinese approximation of the word berry) is a shrub that grows spontaneously in many Asian regions, such as the Himalayan valley, Mongolia, Tibet and China.

It prefers alkaline soils rich in mineral substances and can tolerate significant climatic changes (from -26° to +39°), temperatures that help the plant to grow stronger and produce particular substances that make it stronger and richer in active ingredients .

It is precisely thanks to these important properties that goji has been one of the foundations of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, which attributes many healing properties to the entire plant (bark, roots, leaves and berries), some of which are also confirmed by scientific research. It is not for nothing that goji is also known as the “fruit of paradise”, “red diamond” or “fruit of longevity”.

All this thanks to a little legend…

Goji in legend

According to an ancient legend, there was a well near a Tibetan temple around which many goji bushes grew. Many of the berries ended up in the water of the well, where pilgrims used to drink. Over the years they noticed that those who drank the water from that well enjoyed more than excellent health : over 80 years old they still had all their teeth and no white hair!

This is just a legend, but it explains why goji berries are so popular today !
