Plain of Sibari

Surrounded by the lush Mediterranean scrub and overlooking the vast Gulf of Taranto, it is the ideal habitat for cultivating citrus groves, orchards, and olive groves, whose qualities are recognized worldwide.

The Sibari Plain is the largest plain in Calabria. It is located on the northern Ionian side of the region, between the Pollino and Sila mountain ranges. The Crati River and its tributary Coscile, which flow into the Ionian Sea, cross the entire area.

It takes its name from the ancient Greek city that once stood here. The area was already famous during the Greek-Roman period for the wealth of its cities, the Greek Sibari and Thurii, and the Roman Copia. The archaeological heritage of Sibari is immense: about 2,500 hectares, of which around one thousand directly pertain to the urban areas of Thurii and Copia. Consider that millennia-old plantations from the age of Magna Graecia are still productive today. Indeed, Calabrian olive oil is distinguished by its ancient tradition and unique properties.

Narrowed between sea and mountains, the Sibari Plain is the ideal habitat for cultivating citrus groves, orchards, and olive groves, whose qualities are recognized worldwide. It is from these ingredients that Favella develops its gourmet products.

The fruits are characterized by intense color, sweetness, and uniformity of different calibers. The presence of the Pollino and Sila mountains protects against the formation of wind and hail, and the strong temperature variations between night and day contribute to creating a unique microclimate. In particular, the area is famous for the cultivation of Calabrian IGP Clementines. But that’s not all; this wonderful land, thanks to its strong sun exposure, also produces oranges, lemons, mandarins, apricots, peaches, pomegranates, and strawberries.

Calabrian EVO oil, on the other hand, stands out for the organoleptic qualities of this excellence product, with low acidity and rich flavor. Even today, olives are still picked by hand and cold-pressed. It can have a fruity or spicy, sweet or bitter, strong or delicate taste; its flavor is always determined by various natural factors. Calabrian EVO oil can be considered among the finest in the Italian and Mediterranean production landscape. All our preserved products use the Sweet Oil of Rossano.

In this fusion of history, nature, and tradition stands the Favella Agricultural Company which has been enhancing the precious fruits that this land offers for over eighty years. We do not only cultivate the great classics for which the Sibari Plain is famous but also many other products, including the Goji and Moringa Oleifera, which we were the first to introduce to Europe.

"I don't believe there is anywhere in the world more beautiful than the plain where Sibari stood. It combines every beauty at once: the charming greenery of the surroundings of Naples, the vastness of the most majestic alpine landscapes, the sun, and the sea of Greece." (François Lenormant)
