Origin of the Sibari Plain: the love for agriculture

We hear a lot about this plain, but what is the origin of the Sibari Plain?

Before answering this question, it is necessary to say that the Sibari Plain has been giving us incredible products for many years, both in taste and quality. All this is thanks to the passion that distinguishes the inhabitants of this land, deeply linked to agriculture and pastoralism, done with respect and dedication.

This connection takes us back a long way. But how far back?

The history of the Sibari Plain: from yesterday to today

Did you know that the Sibari plain is the largest plain in Calabria ? The land takes its name from the city of the same name, Sibari, and is located in the northern part of the Ionian coast, in the province of Cosenza. The most important cities in the area? Corigliano Calabro and Cassano allo Ionio.

As for its history, thanks to numerous archaeological finds, it is estimated that this land was already frequented in the Bronze and Iron Ages by Indo-European populations. A very long history…

The name derives from the ancient and famous city of Magna Graecia Sybaris , an important commercial place known above all for the elegance and refinement of the costumes of its population.

Unfortunately, in 510 BC, the city was destroyed by nearby Crotone, but was then inhabited by other populations who dedicated themselves entirely to agriculture and pastoralism .

And finally we come close to the present day. In the post-war period, towards the end of the 50s, a very important agricultural evolution of the area, both through its reclamation and with a real agricultural revolution. And that is how in a short time the Sibari Plain became one of the most prosperous and sought-after areas of Calabria and the entire South.

From history to innovation: here are the specialties of the Sibari plain

Thanks to this long history of agriculture, today the Sibari Plain is the center of some specialties envied by many. Some examples? The Sibari rice , the clementines and olive oil .

But there is also room for innovation! That's why we at Favella, given the prosperity of the area, wanted to try to grow ingredients that are usually grown in other parts of the world. The example that makes us most proud? The  goji berries ! But we have also successfully grown Moringa Oleifera and Finger Lime.
